Nachrichten 64 Tribologie + Schmierungstechnik · 67. Jahrgang · 3/ 2020 2020 STLE International Award Recipient - Dr. Ali Erdemir (June 17, 2020) Over the past three decades, Dr. Erdemir has established himself as a pioneering and distinguished scientist in materials science, surface engineering, tribology and related disciplines. His dedicated and multidisciplinary research has resulted in several key discoveries for which many awards, honors, and patents have been bestowed. His international reputation as a pioneering tribologist elevated his stature to the elected membership of the National Academy of Engineering in 2019, the Presidency of the International Tribology Council in 2017 and STLE in 2016. This year STLE honors Dr. Ali Erdemir with the society’s highest technical award, The International Award. Dr. Erdemir has had major impact on materials science, mechanical engineering, surface engineering and tribology, nano-structured and -composite materials and coatings, physical and chemical vapor deposition, solid/ liquid lubrication, superlubricity, surface science, diamond and diamondlike carbon films, engine tribology, low-dimensional materials. Outstanding contributions to the arts and sciences in these areas have resulted in several breakthrough discoveries and have had a significant positive impact on further understanding of the fundamental friction and wear mechanisms of numerous novel materials, coatings, and lubricants (many of which are patented and licensed to industry). In early 2020, Erdemir joined Texas A&M as a TEES (Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station) Eminent Professor from Argonne National Laboratory, where he served as a distinguished fellow and senior scientist. He received his bachelor’s degree from Istanbul Technical University in metallurgical engineering and his master’s and doctoral degrees in materials science and engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His current research is directed toward the development of novel tribological technologies for a broad range of applications in manufacturing, transportation, and other energy conversion and utilization systems. P.M. Ku Award Recipient - Dr. Martin Webster (June 17, 2020) Dr. Martin N. Webster is the 41 st recipient of the STLE P.M. Ku Award, which recognizes outstanding and selfless achievements for the Society. It is given to the STLE member who most typifies the dedicated spirit of former President P.M. Ku, who worked tirelessly to promote and advance the mission of STLE. After serving on a variety of technical and administrative committees, Webster was elected to the Board of Directors in 2006, served as STLE President in 2015-16 and was named an STLE Fellow in 2019. He is a senior research associate at ExxonMobil Research and Engineering in Annandale, NJ (USA) and has been a member for 30 years. Meet STLE’s New Fellows (June 30, 2020) Only 184 individuals currently hold the membership grade of Fellow, which recognizes STLE members who have made a significant impact in the field of tribology and/ or lubrication engineering. The newest members of this distinguished group, who were approved by the STLE Board of Directors in May, are: Vasilios Bakolas Principal Expert Bearings R&D, Schaeffler Technologies AG & Co. KG, Herzogenaurach, Germany Seong Kim Dean’s Fellow Professor of Chemical Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Ashlie Martini Professor of Mechanical Engineering, University of California, Merced, Merced, CA Fellows candidate must meet a standard for outstanding personal achievements through significant contributions in management, education, research or technological areas. The individual are recognized as an outstanding authority, as shown by patents, books, articles published, or papers presented, or because they have been responsible for significant and widely known improvements in the field. Accomplishments must be beyond those typically expected of a scientist or engineer in the field of tribology and/ or lubrication engineering.
